This is a guide of what to look for in a girl's coat, based on our 52 continuous years of selling girls coats.

The first thing to look for is the style. While style and fashion taste can vary, if you do not like the coat and even more emphatic, if the child does not like the coat, move on.  The experience of a coat that the child is not happy with is not pleasant for parent or child.

The next thing to look for is the type of style of neck closure. We are moving away from any style that has an open V at the neck. These may be very pretty but they are not as functional as coats that close to the neck. There are now many options of stylish coats that come to a full close at the neck. This option is also available for boys coats today. It is an important feature because it assures a way to keep the upper body and neck warm, without resorting to scarves, shawls or the like.

The next factor is the fabric. We are suckers for 100% wool but even a blend of 80% wool should in most cases be quite functional. Any blend of wool and cashmere in a girls coat would be luxurious, but remember that cashmere does not wear well and should not be used in a coat to be worn daily or abused. Cashmere and wool in a coat can add a great rich, soft hand or feel to the fabric.
